The NHL All-Star Game
The NHL All-Star Game is held annually in January, midway through the regular season. The NHL All-Star Game has seen many changes since it was first officially held in 1947. For the first 20 years of its existence, the NHL All-Star Game included the previous years’ Stanley Cup champions playing against a team made up of the best players from other teams around the league. For the next four decades, until 2011, the format for the NHL All-Star Game pitted the Eastern and Western Conference’s best players against each other (except for the period of 1998-2002, when the NHL All-Star Game involved North American all-stars vs. all-stars from the other continents). From 2011-2015, the players involved in the NHL All-Star Game were selected via a draft conducted by the players themselves, the pool of possible all-stars being first selected via fan ballot.
The current format is still more complex: as of 2016, there are four All-Star teams representing the NHL’s four divisions, playing in a single-elimination tournament consisting of 20-minute three-on-three games. The winners of each semi-final game play each other for title of NHL All-Star Game champions!
